University of Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel was involved in a severe car accident on Interstate 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Tuesday evening, July 25, 2024. The incident occurred around 8:45 PM near the exit for Papermill Road.
According to eyewitnesses and authorities, Heupel’s vehicle lost control and veered off the road, striking a guardrail before coming to a stop. Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, and Heupel was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
Fortunately, Heupel’s injuries were non-life-threatening, and he is currently in stable condition. The 46-year-old coach suffered minor injuries, including a broken arm and lacerations.
“Coach Heupel is fortunate to have escaped the accident with his life,” said Knoxville Police Department spokesperson, Officer James Williams. “The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings suggest speed may have contributed to the incident.”
Heupel’s vehicle was severely damaged, but no other cars were involved in the accident. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The University of Tennessee athletic department released a statement expressing relief and support for their head coach. “We are grateful that Coach Heupel is safe and receiving the necessary medical attention. Our thoughts are with him and his family during this time.”
