White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf on woeful season: ‘This year has been very painful for all’

Jerry Reinsdorf, who has presided as owner of the Chicago White Sox for more than four decades, released a statement on Wednesday afternoon acknowledging that the team’s historically bad 2024 campaign has been “very painful for all.”

“Everyone in this organization is extremely unhappy with the results of this season, that goes without saying,” Reinsdorf said in the statement. “This year has been very painful for all, especially our fans. We did not arrive here overnight, and solutions won’t happen overnight either. Going back to last year, we have made difficult decisions and changes to begin building a foundation for future success. What has impressed me is how our players and staff have continued to work and bring a professional attitude to the ballpark each day despite a historically difficult season. No one is happy with the results, but I commend the continued effort.

“I expect to have more to say at the end of the season.”

The White Sox lost 6-4 to the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday and fell to 33-114. The White Sox have 15 games left in the season, and they must win 10 of them to avoid joining the 120-loss New York Mets of 1962 as the worst team of all time.

“I think if you would have told me we were going to end up flirting with the record I would have been a little surprised,” White Sox GM Chris Getz said earlier this week. “Now if you would have told me prior to the year that we would have ended up with over 100 losses, 105, 110, I wouldn’t have been as surprised. But this is the cards that we’ve been dealt at this point. You try to make the best of it, and I think it’s an opportunity to embrace the situation that we’re in. As someone that grew up in Detroit, we saw the Tigers in 2003 with 43 wins and three years later, we’re in the World Series. I view it as kind of the frustrating part of the story, but I also know that the future’s looking bright and it’s going to make it just that much sweeter once we get there.”

The White Sox are off on Thursday before starting a home series against the Oakland Athletics. The White Sox have not won a home game in more than a month.
