Haason Reddick refuses New York Jets request just hours after Robert Saleh offers ‘love’
Haason Reddick was in no mood to answer questions about his future with the New York Jets as the former Philadelphia Eagles star continues to hold out in pursuit of a new contract
Haason Reddick snubbed reporters who quizzed the star pass rusher over his future with the New York Jets as his contract standoff continues.
Reddick is the final player holding out across the league ahead of the new season, which sees the Jets travel to the San Francisco 49ers to close out Week 1 on Monday Night Football. The likes of Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk, CeeDee Lamb and Jordan Love have all signed new deals with their respective teams after skipping varying amounts of training camp, but Reddick’s resistance goes on.
The 29-year-old is yet to set foot on the field for the Jets, being acquired in a trade for a conditional third-round pick with the Philadelphia Eagles in March. Reddick has not reported to the team facility since his press conference and physical on April 1.
In acquiring Reddick, the Jets picked up the final year of his contract, which included a non-guaranteed salary of $14.25 million. But the former Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers pass rusher, who has racked up double-digit sacks in each of the past four seasons, is unhappy with his terms and is demanding a fresh deal or for the Jets to trade him.
General manager Joe Douglas has refused to budge, insisting negotiations will not begin with Reddick’s representatives until he reports for work. Reporters came face to face with Reddick on Tuesday as he strolled along a sidewalk, and SNY caught the interaction on camera.
Reddick refused to answer when asked if he would be prepared to hold out for the entire season, ignoring further questions as he walked away. So far, his holdout has cost him more than $2m in fines and a $250,000 offseason workout bonus.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh insisted he harbors no bitterness towards Reddick. He told reporters on Tuesday: “There’s no disappointment. You’ve got your roster, you’ve got the guys who are here and those are the guys you focus on. Hopefully, eventually, he does get here.
“And when he does get here we’re going to embrace him, we’re going to love him and we’re going to do everything we can to put him in a position to be successful and achieve the goals that he’s trying to achieve as well as us. But I wouldn’t call it disappointment.”
Saleh refused to rule Reddick out from playing on Monday night in Santa Clara, saying it would depend on his conditioning if he were to report for practice in the coming days. But he made clear it would be considered a bonus if he shows up in time for Week 1.
“I mean, it’s like finding change in the couch, I guess, right?” Saleh joked. “But, no, he’s a special football player. And when he gets here, when he eventually gets here, he’s only going to help us.
“Really it’s going to be all dependent on how he looks, if and when he shows up. We’ll put him through some work with the training staff, see where he’s at, and then communicate with him and on what we can figure out.”
