Emiliano Martinez Set to Replace Onana at Manchester United

In a significant development at Old Trafford, Manchester United are reportedly preparing to make a bold move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, with the Argentine World Cup winner being lined up as a replacement for André Onana.

Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for a fee of around £47 million, has had a turbulent first season. While he showed glimpses of brilliance, his inconsistency and high-profile errors, especially in the UEFA Champions League group stage, drew criticism from fans and pundits alike. With United aiming for a stronger campaign next season under Erik ten Hag, the club is considering a change between the posts.

Martinez, 31, has been a standout performer for both club and country in recent years. Since joining Aston Villa in 2020, he has cemented his place as one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers. His heroics for Argentina during their victorious 2022 World Cup campaign further elevated his reputation, showcasing his shot-stopping ability, leadership, and composure under pressure.

Sources close to the club indicate that Ten Hag admires Martinez’s mentality and experience, viewing him as a more dependable option as United seek to stabilize their defensive performances. Villa, however, are reluctant to part ways with their star keeper and are expected to demand a fee upwards of £50 million.

Martinez’s potential arrival would mark another chapter in United’s ongoing efforts to rebuild a squad capable of challenging for major honours. While the deal is still in its early stages, it signals a clear intent from the Red Devils to address key areas ahead of the 2025–26 season.

Should Martinez make the switch to Old Trafford, it could bring an end to Onana’s brief and turbulent tenure as United’s No. 1.
