Red Sox legend reveals his free agent pitch to outfielder Juan Soto

The Boston Red Sox are involved in a number of conversations with free agents around the league, but everyone’s attention has been on the big domino that’s yet to fall – New York Yankees outfielder Juan Soto.

Boston met with Soto and his representation last week and reportedly had a productive first session, but he also met with a few other teams in the days surrounding that meeting.

An interesting layer in the Soto recruitment is the involvement of one of the outfielder’s idols – former Red Sox designated hitter and MLB Hall of Famer David Ortiz.

Ortiz reportedly wasn’t present for the meeting, but he did speak with Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy the other day. And while Kennedy wouldn’t reveal what the conversation was about, Ortiz insinuated that it was about Soto.

While appearing on the “Fenway Rundown” podcast, Ortiz also shared his pitch to Soto for joining the Red Sox this offseason.

“He’s gonna play for an organization that has a lot of history,” Ortiz said. “He’s gonna play for an organization that has the greatest fans. He’s gonna feel like he’s playing at home in the Dominican Republic, and he’s gonna have, in his corner, his Godfather, Big Papi.”

Boston has garnered quite a fan base in the Dominican Republic due to the success of Ortiz, Manny Ramriez and Pedro Martinez. That’s when Soto became a fan of the club, and if he comes to the Red Sox, he’ll be playing for his childhood team, and he’ll be the next player from the Dominican Republic to inspire the nation to support the club again.
