The 2024-2025 NHL season begins, with Samuel Montembeault as the number one goalie for the Montreal Canadiens.

The 2024-2025 NHL season is underway, and Samuel Montembeault enters the year as the Montreal Canadiens’ number one goalie.

A native of Bécancour, Montembeault was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the third round of the 2015 NHL Draft. After appearing in just 25 games for Florida, he found a new opportunity when the Canadiens claimed him off waivers in October 2021.

Since joining Montreal, Montembeault has steadily built a key role for himself. With Carey Price sidelined due to injury and Jake Allen’s departure, Montembeault has become the Habs’ go-to netminder.

Montembeault on Internal Competition

Though the Canadiens have several promising young goaltenders, including Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler, who are eager to earn their shot, Montembeault remains focused on his own path. He acknowledges that the competition with these young prospects can be challenging.

“Yes, that might sting a bit,” Montembeault said about the competition with other goalies.

Despite that, Montembeault is determined to maintain his position as the team’s primary goaltender. Having just signed a three-year, $9.45 million contract, he understands the importance of consistency and the pressures of the role. His main goal is clear: to help the team push for a playoff spot and stay competitive throughout the season.

Montembeault is prepared to fight for his spot and continue living his dream of guarding the crease for the Montreal Canadiens.

In my opinion, Montembeault unquestionably deserves the number one position. He has earned his place in the spotlight and should be given full credit for his efforts. While Cayden Primeau and Jakub Dobes may have potential, Montembeault’s current form makes him the superior choice.
